Creativity is no longer seen as just being for artists and musicians (not that that view was ever accurate). It’s a crucial skill for everybody to master. Following are some of the ways through which creativity can be bought in classrooms.

  • Embrace creativity as part of learning: Creativity has to be adopted as a part of the learning process. Education just doesn’t mean knowledge. But knowledge must be complimented with creativity. A creative mind is powerful than a knowledgeable mind.
  • Teachers got to be creative: Before students, its teachers who has to adopt creativity in teaching in order to render it. They are the first ones to render and share and encourage creativity. They are the medium through which students learn.
  • Think of creativity as a skill: Teach creative skills explicitly. According to Collard, “Creative skills aren’t just about good ideas, they are about having the skills to make good ideas happen.” He suggests creative skills should include 4 major areas:
    Imagination, Being disciplined or self-motivated , Resiliency , Collaboration
  • Giving responsibility to students: Students should take initiatives as well. Initiative will come, once responsibility has been given. Initiation will help foster their imagination and creating better thinking and managing skills. Have them develop their own projects.
  • Use the most effective strategies: Participate in or create a program to develop creative skills. Telling them to collaborate and implement tasks will brighten their creative skills.13
  • Abstracts made fun: Let’s take an example of mathematics.
    – Make it meaningful- The teachers don’t know why they are teaching particular math topics, and they often don’t know what else the students are learning in other subjects. As a result, the students don’t know why they learn those math topics, either. Help students make connections between the math topic and the “real world”.– Where you can, use computers to do the drudge work- For the vast majority of your students (who will not eventually become mathematicians), it’s more important they understand the concepts and which process to use when confronted with different real problems. They then should learn how to use computer algebra systems (or graphics calculators) to solve such problems.
  • Give students time to ask questions: The most important point. Giving students the chance to question, is a good way to check the way they’re thinking. Raising questions is a good sign, that they’re trying to use their thinking ability to its best. “The more we use our mind, the more it gets developed”.

Learning a specific skill set doesn’t have the value in today’s world that it once did. Learning how to be more creative (and thus adaptable) – now that’s what prepares students for life beyond the classroom.
